More radio poetry

Well, much as I don't want to overshadow that lengthy Poetry Bus review-thing I did last post I must just tell you that this week on her BBC 6 Music show Cerys Matthews is reading a Helena Nelson poem. You can hear the show here until next Sunday. The poem is "The Book of the Night" from Helena's 2010 book "Plot and Counter-Plot" (Shoestring Press) and I wrote a bit about that book here (it is a very good book). The poem slot on Cerys' show ("poetry in motion") is at about 1 hour 15 mins or so this week (it's a 2 hour show) but do listen to the whole two hours if you can because there's some lovely music and a real mix of styles. Radio at its very best.

Photo above is from on the road in Tennessee back in April. Gotta love that road...

I always think poetry is one of the things which comes over well on radio Rachel. In fact it is meant to be read out. At our last poetry afternoon a friend read Larkin's 'Lines on a Young Lady's Photograph Album' - I found it absolutely entrancing although I have read it a few times. To hear it read aloud by a good reader made all the difference.

I wonder how easy it is to get permission for Larkin poems for radio. Maybe I should recommend one of those... I have been concentrating on living poets from small publishers so far.

CM is a good reader - makes me jealous in fact. Still, I guess few of us like the sound of our own voice...

Impresario? Too Diaghilev. Promoter? Too Goldsmith. Anyway, this is fab. You'll be a researcher for the show soon!
Loved Swiss's, and thought that Ms Matthews did read it well.

Now, don't be getting me responsibilities! I'm not a fan of responsibilities...

The reading of this one is at least as good as last week's. And I know H Nelson is pleased with it (got a message from her just now) and that's enough for me. It's great to get good poetry out of the shelves and into the ears... as it were.

And other people can send in recommendations you know. I've been concentrating on trying to send suggestions where I know the show could easily get permission (as well as picking very good writing too of course!!). The email is
